World War I

Mid 1914 – Late 1918

The First World War was fought from 1914 to 1918 in Europe, the Near East, Africa, East Asia and on the oceans. About 17 million people lost their lives in it. It began on 28 July 1914 with Austria-Hungary’s declaration of war on Serbia. The armed conflict ended in parts of Europe with the Compiègne Armistice on 11 November 1918, which was synonymous with the victory of the war coalition that emerged from the Triple Entente. Forty states took part in the most extensive war in history up to that time.
